Upper Bavaria


Regional Information

Occupying an area of some 18,000 sq.km, Upper Bavaria is the largest region in Bavaria and with over 4 million inhabitants also the most populous. For administrative purposes, Upper Bavaria is split up into the three cities of Munich, Ingolstadt and Rosenheim as well as 20 counties with a total of 497 municipalities.

The region of Upper Bavaria is one of the most important industrial locations in Europe and has the sixth highest gross domestic product (in terms of absolute purchasing power) after the Île de France region around the French capital, Lombardy, Denmark and the regions of Darmstadt and Düsseldorf. As for its per capita GDP, Upper Bavaria boasts 158 % of the EU average (in 2000) and thus comes seventh in the EU scale. 67 % of the workforce in the service sector make Upper Bavaria an important location for service industries. One out of two service-industry jobs in Bavaria is located in Upper Bavaria.
