Swabia

Regional Information

Swabia extends from the Allgäu High Alps across the foot-hills in the south to the terraced landscape of Swabian Franconia and the Donau-Ries region in the north bordering on Baden-Württemberg in the west and Austria and Lake Constance in the south.  It benefits from its proximity and easy accessibility to Bavaria’s capital, the greater metropolitan area of Munich.

The Greater Augsburg Area is the economic core of Swabia with a population of approximately 615,000 and a workforce of 207,000.  The city of Augsburg is Bavaria’s third largest city with more than 250,000 inhabitants and it is where the administrative headquarters for the district is located.  Additional large cities in Swabia are Kempten (population 61,000), Kaufbeuren (population 42,000) and Memmingen (population 41,000).
