Introduction

Sensorics / measuring technology includes electronic testing, monitoring or automation. Sensor and measuring systems are to be found both in the production means such as machines, plants and tools; as well as in the final products.  They range from automobiles to space stations, from safety engineering to the monitoring of power plants.

Germany’s sensor technology sector is growing at rates of 8-12% percent per annum, creating between 4,000 and 8,000 new jobs in Germany in the past few years.  Commercial market researchers estimate a world market potential of USD 50 to 80 billion.

Power electronics converts electrical energy as efficiently as possible into the form required for diverse applications and controls the power flow. Based on its broad spectrum of use power electronics is of particular significance to many growth industries such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, automation and vehicle engineering (hybrid vehicle). In the field of power electronics studies predict an average growth rate in the world market volume of 7.6 % per annum by 2006 and for the core components of modern power electronics (discrete power semiconductors, power semiconductor modules, power ICs) even a growth rate of up to 11%.
