Research Environment

There is a focus on railway technology research in Bavaria at the Research and Technology Center (Forschungs- und Technologie-Zentrum (FIZ) of the Deutsche Bahn (DB system technology) in Munich-Freimann.

At Bavarian universities, technical solutions for rail components are developed within engineering or mechanical engineering institutes, at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, for example, or at the universities of applied sciences in Augsburg and Nuremberg. Traffic research and traffic engineering are taught at Bavarian universities, particularly at the TU Munich.

The closely knit Bavarian research environment thus contributes to rail-specific solutions without the companies and institutions involved being associated with the railway technology sector. The know-how of the German Aeropspace Center in Oberpfaffenhofen (DLR), for example, helped to develop the ICE aerodynamics.
