Helmholtz Centers

The Bavarian state government and the German federal government have jointly established large-scale research centers.  3 of Germany’s 15 Helmholtz Research Centers are located in Bavaria. 


National Research Center for Environment and Health (GSF) in Neuherberg

Concentration on the complex systems of life at the interface between environmental impact and genetic predisposition.

 


Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik (IPP) in Garching

Concentration on nuclear fusion research.  Its goal is to emulate on Earth the way the Sun generates energy.

 


Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. (DLR)
in Oberpfaffenhofen

With 15 research centers, an annual budget of approx 2.2 billion euros, and 24,000 employees, the Helmholtz Association is Germany's largest research institution. The Association strives to gain insights and knowledge so that it can help to preserve and improve the foundations of human life. Top-rate scientific results are produced in the 6 core fields of Energy, Earth and Environment, Health, Key Technologies, Structure of Matter, Transport and Space.
