Communications & Technology:

Technology Centers

Bavaria’s high-tech incubation centers help companies get through the start-up phase. The following hi-tech incubation centers have been founded in Bavaria with public-sector support:

  • Munich’s Technology Center, maintained by Münchner-Gewerbe-und Technologiezentrumsgesellschaft mbH (MTZ), Munich
  • Innovations-und Gründerzentrum Nuremberg-Furth-Erlangen GmbH (IGZ), Erlangen-Tennenlohe
  • Technologie-und Gründerzentrum GmbH (TGZ), Würzburg (incubation center)
  • Gründer-Innovations -und Beratungszentrum Betriebsgesellschaft mbH (GRIBS), Schweinfurt
  • Techno-Z Technology Center, Freilassing (the center works closely with the nearby Salzburg Technology Center, thus furthering the cross-border development of technologies by Bavaria and Austria)
  • Innovations -und Gründerzentrum Biotechnologie (IZB), Martinsried, Munich (biotech-related incubation center)
  • Logistik-Kompetenz-Zentrum, Prien (center for logistics-related expertise)
  • Umwelttechnologisches Gruenderzentrum (UTG), Augsburg (incubation center for environmental technologies)
  • Innova-High-Tech-Park Kaufbeuren, Kaufbeuren(incubation center)
  • Start-Point - the center for energy and communication Brunnthal-Nord, Munich
  • Gruenderzentrum für Neue Medien, Unterfoehring, Munich (innovation center for electronic media)
  • Software Campus, Munich
  • CNN Call Centers, Nuremberg

Links To Research and Development Institutions

There are now more than 100 institutions in Bavaria providing links to R&D bodies and to local experts, or supplying consulting or problem-solving services in various technological areas.
To facilitate the transfer of technology, institutions carry out a wide range of activities including:

  • The staging of specialized events and seminars centered around technologies
  • The staging of further occupational training courses for companies
  • The organization of congresses and exhibitions presenting and pertaining to research findings and other technological subjects
  • The coordination of high-tech companies’ participation in trade fairs
  • The state-wide dissemination of information

Centers of Application & Utilization

A number of Bavaria’s universities, non-university research institutions and dedicated sponsoring and supporting organizations maintain centers of application and utilization. These centers are found throughout the state, providing their users, primarily SME’s, with direct access to leading edge technologies. In addition to disseminating information and providing further occupational training for young staff members, the centers maintain facilities demonstrating solutions to all of the problems arising in the course of developing key technologies.

Centers for Application & Utilization Include:

  • The Center for Utilization of Product Technologies, Augsburg
  • The Center for Testing Fiber-Reinforced Materials
  • Laboratory for the Application of Laser-Based Material Treatment
  • Center for the Application of Coating Technologies at the Frauenhofer Institute for Research into Silicates
  • Center for New Engineering-Based and Software Technologies
  • Center for the Application of Technologies of Energy Production, EnvironmentalProtection Systems and Fluid Mechanics

Assessing and Monitoring Research and Development

In Bavaria, testing offices, agencies and facilities conducting pilot projects also transfer research findings from the state’s universities, of which they form part, or with which they are affiliated, to its business community.

Their daily work - assessing the effects and effectiveness of technologies - mandates that these bodies take a highly practical approach when carrying out the commissions entrusted to them.

Some of the testing bodies affiliated with Munich's Technical University are:

  • The State Office for Testing of Technical Physics
  • The Laboratory for Structural Chemistry
  • The Institute for the Testing of Hydraulics & Hydrology

The state agency for the testing of materials used in industrial engineering other special purpose institutes include:

  • The Bavarian Energy Forum, maintained by Bayern Innovativ, Nuremberg
  • The Information Center for Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Sources, Lindau
  • The Information and Demonstration Center for Sources of Renewable Energy (especially photovotaics), Fuerth
  • The Testing Agency of the South German Center of Plastics Processing (SKZ), Wuerzburg
  • The Landesgewerbeanstalt Bayern, and its branch offices in Augsburg, Bayreuth, Hof, Regensburg and Wuerzburg
  • The Energy Conservation Consulting Services provided by Munich’s Bauzentrum (the center of building materials and procedures)
  • The “Regional Development and Energy” specialized association, Regensburg
