MUNICH Faithful holidaymakers in Bavaria: after the record month of July the Bavarian tourist industry was again able to report growth for the month of August. With over 2.8 million visitors the figures were up by 3.3 percent compared to those of the previous year. Also the number of overnight stays in August rose to 9.2 million, up 0.3 percent on the previous year. "The excellent figures from the tourism sector confirm Bavaria’s strong attraction and the current outdoor holiday campaign of BAYERN TOURISMUS Marketing GmbH with Hardy Krüger jr. as its promoter is bearing fruit", explained Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs, Emilia Müller.
There has also been a very positive development in the turnovers. The Bavarian catering and hotel industry recorded a nominal increase of 6.4 percent in July and growth in real terms of 3.5 percent. "I am therefore expecting a good summer for the catering and hotel trade in Bavaria", the minister added. Outdoor holidays were very popular in the top summer month of August. Especially counties in the Alpine region were able to record well above average growth figures. This region hosted some 720 000 visitors, and marked an increase of about 8.3 percent over the same month of the previous year. The number of overnight stays was also up 2 percent in the Alpine region, reaching figures of over 3.3 million.
Minister Müller expects the renaissance of holidaying at home to increase even further in view of the unstable economic development, and that tourism in Bavaria will benefit from this trend. "In these turbulent times tourism will be a stability factor more than ever for Bavaria’s economy", Müller continued. German holidaymakers are currently particularly loyal to the vacation areas between the Rhön and the Rupertiwinkel. With 2.1 million guests the number of people from Germany visiting Bavaria increased by over 4 percent in August. The number of visitors from abroad rose slightly by 0.2 percent to reach a total of 730 000 guests.
