Müller: "Jobs generator mechanical engineering is booming"

MUNICH Bavaria’s mechanical engineering industry is booming: "In 2007, the Bavarian mechanical engineers stepped up their sales by an impressive 10.2 % to € 47.5 billion. And what makes this achievement particularly pleasing: with a rapid 6.6 % increase in its workforce to 208.000, the industry has succeeded in once again passing the 200,000 mark for the first time since 1991. Mechanical engineering therefore continues to be a pillar of the economy and employment market that we can count on in Bavaria", commented Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Emilia Müller, referring to the results of a recent ifo survey.

Mechanical engineering was a prime example of the importance of international business. One out of every two jobs in Bavarian industry depends on exports, in the mechanical engineering sector the export share is even as high as nearly 60 %. Müller: "Mechanical engineering is one of our great assets. Bavaria equips the world with machinery. That makes the industry and all Bavaria into a globalization winner, but it also forces us to think internationally and produce top performances in terms of innovation, productivity, quality, design and service. The Bavarian industrial plants have some excellent achievements to their credit. The State Government assists the companies by providing foreign trade support and pursuing a strategy geared to research, development and innovation."

With nearly 210,000 jobs, mechanical engineering is the most employment-intensive sector of industry in Bavaria. When it comes to sales, the over 1,000 Bavarian mechanical engineering businesses rank in second place after the automobile industry. In addition to the manufacture of special machines and machine tools, the term ‘mechanical engineering’ also covers such fields as the production of gearboxes and bearings, pumps, fixtures, turbines, domestic electrical appliances and air-conditioning technology. In Bavaria, the mechanical engineering sector manufactures over 20,000 products. Regional centers of the industry are Augsburg, Schweinfurt, Munich and Nuremberg.
