International acclaim for Bavaria as biotechnology location
Müller: "Munich is an ideal venue for this leading biotech conference"
MUNICH Further confirmation for Bavaria as a top biotechnology location:
BIO-Europe is going to be held in Munich from November 15 to 17, 2010. "I am delighted that we have succeeded in bringing this major conference to Bavaria again for the first time since 2001. As by far the leading center for biotechnology in Germany, Munich is an ideal choice of venue. This leading conference will give international pharmaceutical companies first-hand insights into the advantages Bavaria has to offer as a biotechnology location", commented Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Emilia Müller. BIO-Europe is the most important international partnering conference for the biotechnology industry in Europe. Some 3,000 attendees are expected in 2010.
According to Economics Minister Müller, the State of Bavaria enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide especially in the biotech industry. This was demonstrated by the positive response to the Bavarian presence at BIO 2008 in San Diego, the American counterpart to BIO-Europe. "Research in Bavaria enjoys international acclaim. Innovations and patents from Bavaria are readily taken up. Cooperation projects with university and non-university research institutes in Bavaria are in great demand. The well-trained Bavarian scientists are very highly thought of as members of staff in international research institutions and in the global biotech and pharmaceutical industry." Economics Minister Müller visited BIO 2008 last week during her trip to California and Bavarian participants rated the Convention as exceptionally profitable. It had offered some excellent opportunities for partnering and network building.
The international reputation of the Bavaria biotechnology industry has not come about by chance, in Müller’s opinion: "Bavaria has successfully built up and supported leading research centers in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry. With two elite universities, Bavaria can offer a strong foundation of world repute for basic research and industry-oriented research in biotechnology, medicine and the chemicals industry." The dynamic biotechnology cluster with over 240 firms in Bavaria offered good cooperation opportunities for major pharmaceutical companies to fill their drying up product pipelines. "The Bavarian biotechnology firms have roughly half of all the German products in the clinical phase. And nearly one out of every two German biotechnology companies quoted on the stock exchange is based in Bavaria", Müller underlined.
The Bavarian biotechnology cluster facilitates excellent contacts with companies and research institutions. Such major biotech and pharmaceutical companies as Aventis, Amgen, Biogen-Idec, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Elan Pharma, Astellas, GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis, Merck Sharp & Dohme, Roche, Serono or Daiichi Sankyo have their German or European branch offices in Bavaria. The opportunities available here for development are ideal for small and medium-sized life science firms, including in many cases ‘spin-offs’ from large companies or university research institutions. The Spokesman of the Bavarian biotechnology cluster, Horst Domdey, commented: "The international pharmaceutical industry has discovered Bavaria as a biotechnology location. This is demonstrated by the billions invested in the last few months.
