Double success for biotech firms in the Upper Palatinate
MUNICH / REGENSBURG / NEUMARKT i.d. OBERPFALZ Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Emilia Müller, congratulates the Regensburg firm Geneart AG on receiving the ‘European Biotechnica Award 2008’ and the manufacturer of herbal medicines, Bionorica, from Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz on its distinction as the ‘Entrepreneur of the Year 2008’. "Geneart and Bionorica prove how successful Bavarian biotech companies are. Bavaria as a whole and the Upper Palatinate region in particular offer excellent framework conditions and development opportunities for innovative companies", Müller explained. Both companies from the Upper Palatinate had made a name for themselves with their consistently dynamic growth rates.
Geneart AG, based in the BioPark Regensburg, is receiving the award for its highly successful business concept. The company has revolutionized genetic synthesis and raised the production of genetic sequences from a manual laboratory-based process to a highly industrialized level. Since market entry in 2000, the Regensburg global market leader has succeeded in boosting its sales revenue in the field of synthetic genes by an average of over 70 per cent per annum.
Bionorica AG is one of the most innovative market leaders in the field of plant-based drugs. The pharmaceutical company from Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz which operates from the BioRegio Regensburg has nearly doubled its earnings in the last three financial years. In the current year, the company with a workforce of 749 employees intends to take on at least 160 new staff in Germany and abroad.
Bavaria is by far the leading biotechnology location in Germany. Nearly half of all German publicly quoted biotech firms are based in Bavaria. The 170 small and medium-sized Bavarian biotech companies have more than 70 products in clinical trials. "Technology and innovation funding are key pillars of Bavaria’s proactive policies for growth and employment", commented the Economics Minister. In Bavaria, companies can find a support network of technology transfer organizations and investors, the German and European Patent Offices as well as numerous service providers.
