Burghausen in the Guinness Book of Records / Bavaria’s Economics Minister Zeil hopes this will stimulate tourism in the town, surrounding area and the whole of Bavaria

MUNICH / BURGHAUSEN  Burghausen has now got it in writing: According to the Guinness Book of Records, the over 1,000 meter long castle complex overlooking the town on the River Salzach may call itself ‘The longest castle in the world®’. The certificate will be handed over tomorrow at Burghausen. Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Martin Zeil, gave his congratulations: “I congratulate the town on this spectacular distinction. It is the highest accolade for the whole of Bavaria. The State is proud to boast such unique sights. The title is a fantastic extra trump card that we can play straight away with proactive impact.” The world record could stimulate the tourist industry in Burghausen, the Inn-Salzach region as well as in the whole of Bavaria.

The certificate will be presented by Kristian Teufel, a Guinness World Records Representative from London. In the presence of Burghausen’s Mayor Hans Steindl, it will be handed over to the Burghausen hotelier Georg Reisinger. It was Reisinger, who instigated the matter and pressed for the castle to be recognized by the Guinness Book of Records. The award will first be included in the 2010 edition. After the Bible and the Koran, the Guinness Book of Records is the most sold copyrighted book in the world with currently 100 million copies.

Each year over 40,000 visitors come and stay in Burghausen. With its mixture of picturesque old town, famous castle and the Salzach Valley, the important industrial town is also one of the most popular destinations for daytrippers in the South-East corner of Bavaria. Not least its rich range of cultural amenities makes Burghausen the cultural center of the South-Eastern region of the State with some 22 million daytrippers alone each year. One example is the Burghausen International Jazz Week that celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2009.
