Bavaria’s Economics Minister Müller welcomes improved market incentive program for renewable energies / A challenging performance record in Bavaria

MUNICH The Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs, Emilia Müller, welcomes the approval by the European Commission of the Federal Government’s improved market incentive program for renewable energies in the heating market. "Now that it has been approved by Brussels, the program can also be used by companies and freelancers as of 1 September 2008. I call on the Bavarian entrepreneurs to make as vigorous use of it as possible", Müller appealed. Because investments by companies and freelancers in particular were essential for achieving the ambitious goals set for renewable energies.

"We want Bavaria to continue assuming a leading role in Germany. Our aim is to double the share of renewable energies in energy consumption by 2020. If we can achieve this goal, we will well exceed the European Commission’s target for Germany of 18 % – referred to ultimate energy consumption – with over 20 %. At the same time we intend to raise the share of renewable energies in the electricity generated in Bavaria to between 25 and 30 %", the Minister said. The course had been set for implementing these very ambitious targets with the ‘Climate Programme for Bavaria 2020’ of November 2007 and the new ‘Benchmarks of Bavarian Energy Policy’ of May 2008.

Bavaria already ranked at the top of the league when it came to the use of renewable resources. "At approx. 8 %, Bavaria’s share of renewable energies in the consumption of primary energy is much higher than the German average of about 6 %. The same also applies to their share in the generation of electricity, which amounts to a good 20 % in Bavaria as against 13 % in Germany", Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy commented with great satisfaction. Bavaria was producing two thirds of the total output of hydroelectric power installed in Germany, half of the photovoltaic power, a good third of solar thermal power, one third of the heating pump capacity and more than two thirds of geothermal power. The contribution by biomass towards covering energy demands was around 50 percent higher in Bavaria than the average for Germany.
