Fit for the future: In a comparison between Germany’s 16 States, Bavaria ranks Number 1!

A Study conducted by the Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWI) on behalf of the Hypo-Vereinsbank

According to the "Fit for the Future?" study published in April 2007 by the Hamburg Institute of International Economics and the Hypo-Vereinsbank, among all German states, the State of Bavaria offers the best outlook for the future in Germany.

The study analyzes which of Germany's federal states have the strongest prerequisites for future economic development. This was measured in terms of several criteria:  demographic development, education, innovative strength and the condition of public finances.

The overall results of the study show the State of Bavaria in 1st place.  In the individual categories, Bavaria ranked as follows:

-  In the category of demography Bavaria ranks in 4th place and stands out for the development of its    working population as well as for the large proportion of highly qualified citizens.

-  In the education sector Bavaria ranks in 1st place thanks to its excellent positioning in the PISA Study, the above-average ratio of teachers to students in schools and universities, as well as the states high potential in the training of qualified skilled workers.

-  In terms of innovative strength Bavaria ranks in 6th place and excels mainly for having the second highest number of patent applications in Germany (110 per 100,000 inhabitants) and its above-average R&D intensity.

-  For public finances Bavaria ranks 2nd after Saxony. Bavaria has the lowest deficit rates and smallest debt ratios (at present and up to the year 2020).
