Bavaria’s Economics Minister Müller visits "BIO International Convention" in San Diego, California

MUNICH / SAN DIEGO  Bavaria shows its colors at the BIO International Convention: this year, companies from the State of Bavaria are once again represented at the world’s leading convention for the biotechnology industry. During her visit to the exhibition, Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Emilia Müller, was obviously impressed by the white-and-blue presence: "The BIO International Convention is an excellent venue for our companies to present their worldwide competitive research and innovation competence. Our companies are impressively showing that Bavaria is a frontrunner in biotechnology." The visit to the BIO International Convention is part of the Minister’s trip to California.
"Today, Bavaria has successfully built up and supported leading research centers in the fields of the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry. With two elite universities, Bavaria offers a strong foundation of world repute for basic research and industry-oriented research in biotechnology, medicine and chemicals," commented Müller. "The dynamic biotechnology cluster with over 240 firms in Bavaria offers good cooperation opportunities for major pharmaceutical companies to fill their drying up product pipelines. The Bavarian biotechnology firms have roughly half of all the German products in the clinical phase. And nearly one out of every two German biotechnology companies quoted on the stock exchange is based in Bavaria", Müller underlined during her visit to the exhibition. The Bavarian biotechnology cluster facilitates excellent contacts with companies and research institutions. Such major biotech and pharmaceutical companies as Aventis, Amgen, Biogen-Idec, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Elan Pharma, Astellas, GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis, Merck Sharp & Dohme, Medigene, Roche, Serono, 4SC or Daiichi Sankyo have their German or their European branch offices in Bavaria. The opportunities available here for development are ideal for small and medium-sized life science firms, including in many cases "spin-offs" from larger companies or university research institutions. On behalf of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Bayern International organizes its own Bavarian information and service booth at the BIO International Convention, where Bavarian exhibitors are grouped together and supported by Bayern International. The Bavarian exhibitors and also the Bavarian Information and Service Center are integrated into the German pavillion. The BIO International Convention is the world’s leading biotechnology exhibition and its venue changes every year. For this industry, it is the most important annual meeting point in the North American market. This year, from June 17 – 20, more than 2,200 companies from 70 countries presented their biotechnology products and innovations. Over 20,000 visitors attended.
