Middle Franconia

Regional Information

With a population of 1.7 million and a gross domestic product of around 54 billion euro, Middle Franconia is one of Germany's top ten economic regions. 27 million people live within a radius of 200 km. Over 890,000 gainfully employed persons work in the five cities of Nuremberg, Fürth, Erlangen, Schwabach and Ansbach as well as in the seven counties of the administrative district. Per capita purchasing power in the industrial region of Middle Franconia is 10 percent above the average for Germany as a whole. The growth rates of the past ten years confirm - as do recent studies conducted by independent research institutes (Empirica Delasasse, Prognos AG) on the competitive strength of German and European locations - that the region of Nuremberg continues to excel and is expected to assume "a leading role among the German technology regions" (Financial Times Germany).

On April 28, 2005, the conference of ministers for regional planning decided to admit the Greater Nuremberg area to the group of European metro regions in Germany. This acknowledges the outstanding position of the region as a motor for the economic, social and cultural development with international importance and accessibility.
