Munich
Bavaria’s capital city, Munich, is one of Europe’s leading media clusters with over 14,000 media companies that provide 185,000 media-related jobs. Almost one third of Germany’s national television broadcasters are located in the Greater Munich Area, as well as Kabel Deutschland, the leading cable operator, and Primiere, the most important pay TV platform, and Astra Platform Services (APS), the primary satellite transmission center. Additional major media companies located in the Greater Munich Area are companies such as Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation), ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG, Bavaria Film, Tele München Group, Bertelsmann Music Group.
Also located in Munich are numerous internationally known publishing houses such as Burda-Verlag, C.H. Beck, Langenscheidt, Süddeutscher Verlag, Münchner Zeitungsverlag and Random House/ Bertelsmann. In the book publishing sector, in city rankings Munich is second only to New York City.
Munich’s media cluster is complimented by smaller clusters across the many of Bavaria’s regions. To name a selection of the smaller clusters Augsburg has the Weltbild and Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung, Nuremberg has the Nürnberger Nachrichten, Nürnberger Zeitung, Sebaldus Publishing located in their cities. In Kissing, WEKA Business Information, one of Germany’s largest publishing conglomerates with 14 publishing houses is located. WEKA Business Information has also developed into a provider of specialist information based multimedia solutions in the B2B and B2G sectors. The Vogel media group is located in Würzburg and the Neue Presse Verlag GmbH is located in Passau, and the Mittelbayerische Verlag is located in Regensburg.
