Bavaria's Industry Cluster Initiative

High-Tech Clusters

Production-oriented Clusters

Cross-sectoral technologies

Bavaria's "Cluster Initiative" is part of the states's multi-faceted, pro-business economic policy to promote Bavaria as a business and science location. The aim of the initiative is to build state-wide networks interlinking business and scientific potential in 19 defined industry and excellence clusters and thus to activate innovation and productivity potential in these clusters.

Under Bavaria’s “Cluster Initiative” industry platforms have been formed to bring together companies, research establishments and universities in order to permit intensive cooperation and hence release innovative potential.  The industry networks provide a strong platform for developing new products and production processes and for strategically positioning companies into growth markets.

Each industry network has a cluster spokesperson and a cluster manager to ensure that the platforms are successful in bringing contact and communication between industry and science for the creation of innovative projects and for economic growth.

With Bavaria at the Forefront: Innovation policy combined with corporate zeal

With 11 universities, 17 Universities of Applied Sciences, 11 Max Planck Institutes, 9 institutes of the Fraunhofer Society and the 3 major research establishments, Bavaria has an excellent research landscape. In conjunction with a comprehensive range of support programs for research and development projects, Bavaria is now one of the most attractive and efficient technology locations in Europe:
  • With an investment share of approximately 15 percent of the state budget, Bavaria invests more than any of the other non-city states in the former Federal Republic.
  • Close to three percent of the gross domestic product is invested in research and technology in Bavaria. This places Bavaria well above the German average and gives it a top ranking within Europe.

The cluster campaign consistently pursues Bavarian innovation policy, thus enabling the State Government to boost the competitiveness of industry in Bavaria. This will secure and create jobs in all parts of the State. Further information can be obtained under www.bayern-innovativ.de/cluster2006.
