The Bavarian university landscape is diverse, efficient, and sophisticated consisting of 11 universities, 19 Universities of Applied Sciences (similar to U.S. colleges), 11 Max Planck Institutes, 9 institutes of the Fraunhofer Society and the 3 major research establishments. Bavaria also has Academies of the Arts and various other colleges, i.e., for philosophy, theology, political science etc.
Bavarian universities are in a dynamic process of transformation and internationalization. “U.S. Style” Bachelor's and Master's degrees are gradually being introduced, as well as courses of study offered in the English language.
